History: Rathkata is the Inquisitor, specifically of Vashoth (aka “Qunari”) origin. Regardless of the common use of “Qunari” as the title for her nameless species, however, Rathkata has no experience with the Qun outside her interactions with a couple mercenaries from her former company and the Iron Bull. Her parents fled the Qun not long after she was conceived, allowing her to grow up fairly comfortably on a farm a little ways up the Vimmark Mountains between Ostwick and Markham. Her powers manifested at age 12, and while her mother was capable of training her in basics to keep her safe, Rathkata outgrew her mother's limited education very quickly. Eventually her parents called in the help of Shokrakar, a family friend and head of the Valo-kas mercenary company, which at the time included two fully trained mages. Rathkata set out with them at age 15 primarily for training purposes and ended up working with them until 12 years later, when Shokrakar signed a contract that would forever remain unpaid: an agreement to help guard a conclave in the Frostback Mountains. Here, Divine Justinia V set out to make peace between mages and Templars, bringing together all the leaders and most important members of both groups in an attempt to stop a war centuries in the making.

Putting this many important people in one place probably wasn’t the best idea, however, considering the conclave was attacked, the Divine was sacrificed and everyone else was killed to complete a magic ritual designed to tear a hole in the Veil and allow the ancient magister-turned-darkspawn Corypheus to pass through. The ritual partially succeeded, punching a huge hole in the Veil that onlookers referred to as "the Breach," but through a combination of attentiveness and luck, Rathkata succeeded in keeping the ritual from fully succeeding by interrupting Corypheus and getting herself and the Divine thrown bodily into the Fade in his place. Justinia allowed herself to be killed in order to help Rathkata return to the other side of the Veil, where she was immediately taken into custody by what remained of the Chantry’s forces for supposed murder of the Divine.

Rathkata didn’t make it through these events unscathed, either, ending up with a conduit to the Fade on her hand in the form of a glowing green mark. While the initial prognosis declared that the mark would spread until it took her life (just like the Breach would spread until it swallowed the world), Rathkata was able to use it to stop the Breach from growing, and thereby stopped the mark from attempting to consume her as well. From there she went on to help recreate the Inquisition of old, enlisting a close circle of allies and allying with the rebel mages of Thedas for assistance in sealing the Breach for good. This absolutely worked, but would have been worth more celebration if it didn’t also lead Corypheus to performing a strike on the Inquisition’s base at Haven, killing a great deal of people and forcing Rathkata into a suicide mission wherein she brought the mountain down on the town in an orchestrated avalanche.

Miraculously, Rathkata not only survived the ordeal, but Corypheus’ attempt to remove the mark from her hand—called an Anchor—succeeded only in stabilizing it, giving her the ability to create tears in the Veil as well as close them. She eventually caught up with the remaining Inquisition forces and, with the help of Solas, led them to make base in the lost fortress of Skyhold. Here Rathkata was named Inquisitor, leader of the Inquisition and possibly the most politically powerful person in the Thedas; the rest is history.

That history includes:
  • Working very very hard to make as many allies as possible, which led her to spending a great deal of time with Josephine and eventually resulted in the two of them forming a relationship. Rathkata dueled Josephine’s arranged fiancée for her hand and, with a resounding declaration of love in the middle of Val Royeaux, won the hearts of the majority of onlookers—and her girlfriend.
  • Using her power as Inquisitor to stop the growing conflict between Tevinter and Nevarra, while maintaining alliance with both nations.
  • Allowing Empress Celene to be assassinated so she could place Gaspard on the throne under the control of Briala, Celene’s former pet assassin and the first elf in Orlais to be given a title.
  • Letting Hawke stay behind in the Fade to fight the Nightmare, mostly due to his insistence that Corypheus was in part his responsibility and he had to do something to make up for failing to destroy him for good.
  • Drinking from the Well of Sorrows herself rather than allowing Morrigan to do so, thereby swearing herself into the service of Mythal or the rest of her life. (Note: When allying oneself with dead gods in exchange for needed power, please make sure the god is actually dead first or problems could arise.)
  • Turning Samson over to Cullen’s custody, to be handled however the commander would see fit.
  • Supporting Leliana as the best possible candidate for Divine.
  • Putting the goat-throwing Avvar in a gibbet for approximately two hours and then releasing him.

At present, Rathkata is in the process of helping Leliana to select a new spymaster to take her place with the Inquisition (as Rathkata’s glowing support assured that Leliana was chosen to be the next Divine), searching for Solas to no avail, spending time with her friends and girlfriend, and trying to arrange a visit back up north to see her parents. Unfortunately, some recent strangeness in the Frostback Basin has dragged her off in exactly the wrong direction, so that visit is probably going to have to wait. (Why is Inquisitor Ameridan important, exactly?)

Mutation: While Rathkata isn’t human, considering she’s a species native to her world she doesn’t count as being in possession of a nonhuman mutation. However, she is a mage, specializing in Knight Enchanter abilities, which allow her to manipulate energies around her to create energy swords and shield herself from attack by literally slipping halfway out of reality and becoming incorporeal. She can also do basic elemental magic, including fireballs, electric bursts and short barrages of elemental energy, but even with her specialization she has no healing abilities whatsoever in the City.

The Anchor gives Rathkata the ability to sense and seal up rifts in reality, as well as opening them for short periods of time. This normally allows her to root people to the spot, make some foes explode into energy and even to cause implosions with the right amount of focus; in some instances Rathkata has even been able to absorb the echoes of memory she and others have left behind. In the City, however, these abilities are limited at best. Instead, an attempt to use the Anchor will generally result in a bit of a light show on her hand, an unpleasant pins-and-needles sensation, and not much else.

Price: Since the City isn’t connected to the Fade the same way Rathkata’s reality is, casting is extremely difficult and strenuous; depending on the element used, Rathkata not only suffers from severe exhaustion but can also face the same price as a ‘Mancer for the given element for short periods of time. The likelihood of her being able to go incorporeal or draw up her sword for more than a minute or two at a time is slim at best, and at worst pushing too hard could cause her entire body to shut down instantly from the loss of energy. If she wants any chance of being able to cast when she needs it, she’ll need to eat more than most people (even of her size) in an attempt to keep up the calories needed to physically power and ability that, until now, was almost as easy as breathing.

The Anchor is a little more difficult to deal with. Without a connection to the Fade, there’s really nothing on the other side of the rifts Rathkata creates—or the one in her hand. Any successful use of the Anchor will cause it to resume spreading and overuse will allow it to consume her completely. If she goes a week or two between uses, the mark will recede back to its original state, but the more she uses it the further each subsequent use will make it spread. If not kept under control, this will be fatal.

Personality: Rathkata is lawful good, with some neutral good tendencies. She believes in justice more than she believes in equality, and throughout the entire course of her trial by fire as Inquisitor she worked not to set the world back to what it once was, but rather to rebuild it into something better. She understands that change is necessary but traditions have purpose, and does her best to be understanding of the way other cultures function while still allowing herself (and her people) to be critical of the things that make them dangerous to themselves and the world around them. (She allied with Tevinter, Nevarra, Orlais and Ferelden at the same time, she's pretty good at setting personal issues aside for the greater good.)

As far as allegiances and personal beliefs go, at this point Rathkata tends to err on the side of caution. Whatever it takes to maintain order and keep people from dying, she's on board. As long as there's no torture or blood magic or crazy experimentation involved, she's seen quite enough of that.

Early into the Inquisition Rathkata was almost timid; this is part of a lifelong attempt to avoid intimidating people where possible, given that Rathkata was one of the only members of her kind for miles in all directions growing up (with the others being her parents) and her kind just happens to be seven- or eight-foot-tall grey people with semimetallic skin, mildly sharp teeth and horns. Growing up as the only giant in a region full of humans, elves and dwarves left Rathkata constantly working to minimize her own presence in any given area, which made working with the Inquisition more than a little difficult to start. (While she was greatly respected among the Valo-kas, at least she wasn't in charge!)

However, after meeting Dorian and being flung into the future Rathkata made the decision to give up second-guesses and focus on action. She has been known to agonize over major decisions after the fact, but she's gotten very good at focusing on the here and now. However, in the City, some of her former delicacy is likely to return—this time not out of fear of standing out, but out of concern for everyone else's human-based sensibilities. Rathkata isn't worried about getting hurt, but she will worry about scaring her new neighbors.

Overall Rathkata is a clear- and soft-spoken, confident woman who has very little in the way of fear for her own wellbeing (unless there is a Great Bear involved then she will ollie the fuck out). She'll defend pretty much anyone to the death if they need it, assuming the person in question isn't responsible for some kind of creeping horror or something. She's a little snarky and has a great sense of humor, but most people outside her inner circle (and Harding and Krem) don't get to see that side of her often since the explosion at the conclave. She's often seen as being distant, and even a little sad, but she does appreciate her life for what it is: the first step on a long journey to change the world.

Non-Mutation Skills/Powers: As Vashoth, Rathkata is built like a brick house. She's almost 7' tall, weighs a good 250lbs at minimum and can pick up her adult human girlfriend with one arm if need be. She has probably actually tucked Sera under her arm while running away from angry bears on more than one occasion. She may also have done this to Cullen, but neither of them will talk about it. She has absolutely done it to Dorian, Varric, Harding and Solas, usually with permission but not always. (Great Bears are REALLY SCARY, okay?!) In other words, Rathkata is huge and absolutely just as strong as she looks, but this is thanks entirely to her physical makeup rather than any magic or mutations.

Memories Lost: In the City, Rathkata has lost her memory of the Conclave—even though this was restored during the siege on Adamant Fortress, at great risk to everyone involved—as well as her memories prior to joining the Valo-Kas mercenaries at age 15. Also, while she remembers her advisers and knows she is in a relationship, she cannot for the life of her remember the person with whom she is in this relationship.

[The transmission starts with a blur of movement while she situates it and figures out exactly what she's supposed to do. When it settles, Rathkata's expression is somewhere between confused and frustrated. She chews her lower lip for a second before taking a deep breath and speaking.]

This is...well. Confusing.

My name is Rathkata Adaar and I'm with the Inquisition. Assuming there's anyone here who knows what that is, which doesn't seem likely considering the way everything is around here.

[She sighs.]

Give me a tiny Eluvian and set me loose in a city with nothing but humans everywhere that's just brilliant.

[She shakes her head slightly, then reaches up to comb an errant lock of white hair back toward the space between her horns.]

I suppose this is really just a formal introduction. I'm sure it's very nice to meet you all, although I haven't really met many of you properly yet. Your city seems very interesting and I look forward to getting to know it--and you--better.

Thank you very much for your time.

[Again the image blurs as she turns her tablet to figure out how to shut it off.]

Was it th--

[The transmission cuts out.]

Log Sample:
Rathkata had gotten used to some things that many people would consider odd, many others that most people would find frustrating and more still that the majority of Thedas considered utterly impossible. Today, as it turned out, fell squarely into all three categories seamlessly.

Odd: waking up somewhere she didn't recognize even in terms of architecture. Particularly strange given the fact that in her travels throughout Thedas she had everything from historians to Dorian pointing out the subtle differences of this ruin versus that ruin, this village versus that village, this ridiculously large statue versus that more ridiculous even larger statue.

Frustrating: the clothing provided by whoever made this place, and presumably brought her here, barely fit. She was used to having to make her own clothing, at least, and had a few tricks to make undersized apparel work in a pinch (primarily to do with cutting holes and stringing "extra" material through them to make it stay put), thus while this was aggravating it was hardly insurmountable.

Impossible: not only had she been brought here alone, without her knowledge or consent only to be unceremoniously dropped into unfamiliar territory, but the Anchor stung. It stung like when the first Breach had first been opened, when she singlehandedly closed the second, like it hadn't since the sky went calm. Like it had when she and the others traversed the Fade during the siege on Adamant. The sky outside this odd little room was pale and overcast, without a sign of a gap; this place was quite clearly and obviously not the Fade.

She rubbed at the glowing mark idly with her thumb, jaw tense with worry. It wasn't a terrible pain, not like when the Breach spread or when Corypheus punched the second hole in the sky, but there was pain there nonetheless. The Anchor hadn't hurt at all since she healed the sky that last time, months ago. The sudden resurgence was concerning to put it lightly.

"First order of business," she murmured to herself as she boarded a cart, "find a pair of gloves."
